Howl's Moving Castle influenced ハウルの動く城 (Howl's Moving Castle)

Miyazaki's film of Diana Wynne Jones's novel. Sophie, the curse that makes her old, the walking castle, Calcifer's bargain and Howl's vanity all come straight across. The war is Miyazaki's, not hers. The novel has no bombing campaign and no pacifist argument; he added both, and the film is usually read against the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Jones, who did not work on the film, said she liked it and that it was recognisably his rather than hers, which is about as clean a statement of what an adaptation can be as anyone has given.
