The Wheel Of Time influenced The Licanius Trilogy

James Islington has been open that Licanius came out of loving The Wheel of Time, and the books are read as the closest thing to it written since. The inheritance is concrete: a magic with named, systematised parts and strict costs; an order of trained users that is both feared and needed; a prophesied figure whose identity is the plot; a long-sealed enemy and a seal that is failing; and a book shape that keeps widening the map. What Islington does differently, and what the reviews fasten on, is the time travel: the prophecy is not a promise but a causal loop.
