GSC Game World built S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on the Strugatsky brothers' novel as much as on the Chernobyl disaster: the Zone, deadly anomalies that bend physics, valuable artefacts, and the stalkers who risk their lives to smuggle them out all come from Roadside Picnic, as does the name.
