Scott Frank's miniseries adapts Walter Tevis's novel about Beth Harmon, an orphan who learns chess from a janitor in a Kentucky orphanage and rises to challenge the Soviet champions, while fighting her dependence on tranquillisers and alcohol. It follows the book closely, down to its final games in Moscow.
