牡丹亭 (The Peony Pavilion) influenced 紅樓夢 (Dream of the Red Chamber)

In chapter 23 of Dream of the Red Chamber, Lin Daiyu overhears girls of the household rehearsing lines from The Peony Pavilion and is overwhelmed by them. Tang Xianzu's play, about a love strong enough to overcome death, is quoted inside the novel and is part of how Cao Xueqin frames desire in it.
