The evidence
Lerner and Loewe's musical adapts George Bernard Shaw's play about the phonetics professor Henry Higgins, who bets he can pass off the Cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle as a duchess. It keeps much of Shaw's dialogue, and softens his ending, which refused to pair Eliza with Higgins.
