The film tells the Perseus myth as Ovid gives it in the Metamorphoses: Perseus, son of Zeus, beheads Medusa, whose gaze turns men to stone, and uses her head to save Andromeda from a sea monster. The Kraken and the mechanical owl Bubo are the film's own inventions.
