Julian Fellowes won an Academy Award for writing Gosford Park, and Downton Abbey grew out of it: a great English country house seen at once from upstairs and downstairs, with the aristocratic family and their servants given equal weight. The producer Gareth Neame asked Fellowes for a series in the same world.
