Isao Takahata's film adapts Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical story about a teenage boy and his little sister who try to survive on their own after the firebombing of Kobe in 1945. Nosaka wrote it partly as an apology to his own sister, who died of malnutrition.
