The film series begins with an adaptation of Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Identity: an amnesiac man pulled from the sea with a bank account number implanted in his hip learns that he is a trained assassin. The films keep the premise and the name and replace the novels' Cold War plots with a rogue CIA programme.
