Todd Phillips has named Scorsese's The King of Comedy, with Taxi Driver, as a model for Joker. Both follow an isolated aspiring comedian fixated on a late-night talk-show host, and Joker casts Robert De Niro, King of Comedy's Rupert Pupkin, as the host, Murray Franklin: the other side of the same desk.
