Verne built the form Conan Doyle is working in: an expedition led by an overbearing scientist, equipped and argued about in detail, into a place where extinct animals survive, with the geology explained to the reader as they descend. Doyle's addition is the one that mattered afterwards. Verne's prehistoric creatures are encountered underground, in passing, on the way to somewhere else; Doyle puts them on a bounded plateau and makes the enclosure the subject. Every dinosaur island since is descended from that change rather than from Verne directly. Filed HIGH and Foundational: this is where the lost-world story becomes a genre with rules, and Doyle's title gave it its name.
