Akira Toriyama began Dragon Ball as a loose retelling of Journey to the West. Son Goku is Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, with a tail, a flying cloud and an extending staff; Oolong is Zhu Bajie, the pig; and the first arc is a journey to gather treasure, before the series turned to martial arts tournaments.
