Die Hard adapts Roderick Thorp's novel, in which a detective visiting his daughter at an office Christmas party is trapped in the skyscraper when terrorists take it over. The film makes the hero younger, makes his wife the hostage instead of his daughter, and turns the villains into thieves posing as terrorists.
