Oscar Hammerstein II wrote the book and lyrics of both. Show Boat (1927, with Jerome Kern) set a serious story to songs that grew out of it; Oklahoma! (1943, with Richard Rodgers) made that integration the model for the book musical. MEDIUM: the connection is the form one writer carried from one show to the next.
