Tayeb Salih's novel reverses Conrad's journey. Instead of a European travelling up the Congo into an Africa he sees as darkness, Mustafa Sa'eed, a Sudanese man, travels north to London and destroys the Englishwomen who treat him as an exotic fantasy, and the narrator's journey along the Nile answers Marlow's.
