Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss's series adapts Arthur Conan Doyle's stories into present-day London: Holmes texts instead of sending telegrams, Watson blogs instead of writing for the Strand, and each episode reworks a canonical story, from A Study in Scarlet as "A Study in Pink" to The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Bill Finger and Bob Kane built Batman as a detective as much as a fighter, and the model was Sherlock Holmes: a brilliant, solitary deductive mind with a laboratory, a faithful companion and a master criminal for a nemesis. Detective Comics billed him as the world's greatest detective, the reputation Holmes had held.
Agatha Christie wrote Poirot in the tradition Holmes created and made no secret of it: Captain Hastings, who narrates the early novels, is a Watson, a loyal and slightly slow companion who records the detective's cases, and Inspector Japp plays Lestrade's part.
