AdaptationHIGH

Bruce Miller's series adapts Atwood's 1985 novel, with Atwood as consulting producer and in a first-episode cameo. Season one follows the book closely and then runs past its ending, which the novel leaves deliberately open at the van door. Atwood's own sequel, The Testaments, was written alongside the show.

About the work

The Handmaid's Tale

In a theocracy built on the ruins of the United States, fertile women are assigned to powerful households as property and made to bear their children. One of them, stripped of her name, works out that surviving and resisting are not the same choice. The adaptation overtook its source and sent the novel back up the bestseller lists.
