Adaptation but a loose one, as the tv series was intended towards a family public and had a lot of the violence removed in favour of developing more the fantasy/mystery side.
- Story: While the book covers a chaotic timeframe of just over a week in a small Maine town, the TV show expands, alters, and reinvents the mythology, character arcs, and the ultimate source/explanation behind the dome.
- Character Changes: Many character names and core dynamics remain, but several characters were combined, invented for television, or given entirely different fates and motivations compared to the novel.
- Creative Freedom: Stephen King gave the showrunners his blessing to take the story in a completely new direction so that readers of the book could still be surprised by the television plot.
