A Christmas Carol

A miserly protagonist undergoes a redemptive transformation and discovers the true meaning of Christmas.

It isn't a faithful period adaptation, but it is a direct adaptation that retains the core narrative structure: Frank Cross is the modern equivalent of Ebenezer Scrooge. Jacob Marley is replaced by Frank's deceased former boss, who appears as a ghostly warning. The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future all appear (albeit reimagined). The protagonist is forced to confront his life and undergoes redemption. The story ends with his moral transformation. It changes: Setting: Victorian London → 1980s New York. Occupation: Miser → ruthless television executive. Tone: Gothic morality tale → dark comedy/satire.

Marley's ghost recalls the Ghost of Hamlet's father, who returns to warn the living. In Hamlet, the Ghost of Hamlet's father appears at night wearing chains (or armor, depending on the scene), reveals that he is suffering after death, and returns to urge Hamlet to set things right. In A Christmas Carol, Jacob Marley also returns after death, burdened by the chains he forged through greed, to warn Scrooge to change his life before it is too late. The idea of a restless spirit returning with a moral warning was already common in folklore, but Shakespeare's ghost is one of the best-known literary precedents.

His own childhood hardship and his observations of London's poor inspired Scrooge's transformation and the novella's critique of social inequality.

Dickens drew from the English Christmas ghost story tradition, traditional English folk tales of wandering spirits and haunted places.
