Broken Sword

Video Game · 1996

InfluenceMEDIUM

Charles Cecil has cited Herge as the reference point for Broken Sword's look and shape, and the game's Paris is drawn in ligne claire: flat colour, clean uniform outlines, carefully researched real locations. The story is a Tintin story. An ordinary young man with no special skills stumbles into a conspiracy in a European capital, follows it through a secret order with medieval roots, and travels between real countries solving it by asking questions and paying attention. Filed MEDIUM: a stated visual and tonal debt rather than borrowed material.

Indiana Jones

Film · 1981

InfluenceLOW

Spielberg has told this story himself. French reviews of Raiders of the Lost Ark compared it to Tintin, he had not read the books, he then did, and he spent nearly thirty years trying to film them before making The Adventures of Tintin in 2011. Whether or not it reached him before Raiders, Hergé built the form both share: serialised globe-trotting adventure where an artefact drives the plot, research is shown on the page, and each chapter ends on a fall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Tintin_(film) This is a rare example of circular influence/not a direct A to B influence and therefore kept as LOW.
