Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical adapts Gaston Leroux's novel about a masked, disfigured composer who haunts the Paris Opera, tutors the young soprano Christine Daaé and falls in love with her. It keeps the chandelier, the underground lake and the masquerade, and makes the Phantom a romantic figure.
